Geert Wilders is not prime minister

[edit]

Geert Wilders is incorrectly named prime minister of the Netherlands. Current outgoing prime minister is Mark Rutte. Even though Geert Wilder’s party won last election, he will not be prime minister as agreed with the other three forming parties. Succeeding prime minister after last election is not decided yet. 87.212.254.148 (talk) 20:14, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The two BBC News profile links at Netherlands § External links go to the same page. I suggest removing one - the second, since that old URL now redirects. --Talky Muser (talk) 19:29, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What's in a name

[edit]

Following what I assume to have been a demand request from the Netherlands Government, many (if not most/all) United Nations agencies/organizations are now using "Kingdom of the Netherlands" in reference to the "constituent country" in Europe. How does this square with the the notion that (some of the?) the overseas territories are also part of the Kingdom?—GRM (talk) 15:19, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two entities can have the same name, or be used to define different aspects of a single but amorphous entity. I'd be interested in seeing a source on the UN terminology. CMD (talk) 15:22, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is a United Nations editorial guide online, which points (or used to) to a database for terms. Unfortunately, that link was never very helpful to me. I "fear" the change is too recent to have made it into the latest style guides, but I know WHO and FAO have adopted this—GRM (talk) 16:26, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The map of the Netherlands and its provinces almost at the end is not entirely correct. There are 3 areas indicated as Flevopolder, but the one in which the word Flevo is written, is called Noordoostpolder, or in English Northeastpolder. The other 2 are indeed Flevopolders (multiple) as one is East Flevoland and the other is South Flevoland. Please correct this. 2A02:A46A:2F3:1:F727:6E25:85B7:1B92 (talk) 12:38, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Misinformation

[edit]

This is just one example "the Netherlands stayed neutral in world war 1", that is not accurate, the Netherlands did not exist at the time,it was the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Netherlands did not exist until December 29 1954 [1][2], UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 18:15, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think that would be overly formal. The Kingdom and the country were the same as I understand. And referring to the Netherlands makes it more readable. Dajasj (talk) 18:37, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dajasj,but they are not the same though UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 18:58, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well either the Netherlands did not exist and then the Netherlands refers to the Kingdom, or the Netherlands did exist and as part of the Kingdom stayed neutral, right? Dajasj (talk) 19:06, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I get what you are saying, but it may still be misleading to readers UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 19:20, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The situation now is what's confusing. Before recently, "The Kingdom of the Netherlands" and "The Netherlands" were the same thing. Largoplazo (talk) 21:39, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This article makes the impression that The Netherlands and The Kingdom of The Netherlands are the same things, but they are not,The Netherlands did not exist until 1954 from what I could determine, while the Kingdom of the Netherlands existed from 1815 UnsungHistory (Questions?) For me, a native Dutchman, this is not a substantive discussion. As it reads in Kingdom of the Netherlands, the country is commonly known simply as The Netherlands. The Kingdom was constituted in 1815 but the Netherlands existed as a nation long before that. The country declared its independence in 1581, in the Act of Abjuration. Its territory and form of government have changed many, many times in 400+ years of existence but the country is still commonly referred to as the Netherlands. So, the article Netherlands-United States relations correctly states that diplomatic relations betheen the Netherlands and the United States started in 1776. In 1954, the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands was adopted, to give Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles autonomy within the Kingdom. That does not mean that the Charter created a new, previously inexistent country called The Netherlands. It is true that today the expression "the Netherlands" refers more precisely to the mostly European part of the Kingdom and the expression "Kingdom" is to explicitly include Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Nevertheless, the expression "the Netherlands was neutral in World War I" is correct, just as is "the Netherlands and the United States started diplomatic relations in 1776". What is not correct is the phrase "the Netherlands did not exist before 1954".Ruud Buitelaar (talk) 22:14, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruud Buitelaar,see WP:Verifiability,please provide sources for you statement UnsungHistory (Questions?) (Did I mess up?) 23:57, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Might you have the courtesy to specify which of Ruud's assertions you're contesting? I doubt that you disagree with every assertion made in the course of 11 sentences and it's unreasonable to expect Ruud to find sources to support all of them. Meanwhile, could you please find sources to support the supposition that it's considered egregious to refer to "The Kingdom of the Netherlands" as simply "The Netherlands" and especially for your assertion that there was no such thing as The Netherlands till 1954? Largoplazo (talk) 00:16, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
https://www.biicl.org/files/6299_charterenglish.pdf opposes that the netherlands and the kingdom of the netherlands are = UnsungHistory (Questions?) (Did I mess up?) 00:29, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some terms can get specific legal meanings in particular contexts, this does not always define general usage, or even technical usage in other contexts. CMD (talk) 01:46, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That source takes care of 1954 being the year in which the two entities were technically distinguished by calling one "Netherlands" and the other "Kingdom of the Netherlands". That has no bearing either on common terminology today or on terminology at any level in the days of World War I. The official name of the UK is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" but you'll notice that on Wikipedia it's generally referred to as "United Kingdom", period. The fact that the shortened form of "Kingdom of the Netherlands", "Netherlands", coincides with the full name of the smaller entity is beside the point. Largoplazo (talk) 02:56, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. Please see James C. Kennedy (2017), A Concise History of The Netherlands, Cambridge University Press. Ruud Buitelaar (talk) 02:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch Value System

[edit]

This section seems a bit POV to me and nationalistic. The sources are from 2000, nearly 25 years go. There has been a sharp rise of far-right parties in the Netherlands who hold anti-Islam views. In fact, they are currently in power of the country.

I believe this sections should be removed. 2A0A:EF40:E01:DB01:416A:E1DE:926:FA8 (talk) 16:09, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
